Bangladesh is currently experiencing a concerning rise in measles cases across several districts, prompting health authorities to issue urgent public warnings and intensify vaccination campaigns. Children under five years of age remain the most vulnerable group, with outbreaks reported in both rural and urban areas. Health officials have identified low immunization coverage in some communities as the primary reason behind the resurgence of this highly contagious disease.
Measles is a viral infection that spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, or close contact. The current outbreak has led to increased hospital admissions for children with high fever, rash, cough, and complications such as pneumonia in severe cases.
Doctors warn that measles can become life-threatening if not managed early, especially in malnourished children or those without vaccination protection.
What to Do For the Outbreak
Health experts and the Ministry of Health recommend the following steps:
1. Get Vaccinated Immediately
Ensure all children receive two doses of the measles-rubella (MR) vaccine. Unvaccinated children are at highest risk.
2. Seek Early Medical Help
If a child develops:
- High fever
- Red rash starting from the face
- Cough or runny nose
- Red eyes
-
Take them to a nearby health center immediately.
3. Avoid Crowded Areas
During outbreaks, limit exposure to crowded places to reduce the risk of infection spread.
